The pace and church of St. Peter, Nicolaas Visscher (1681+) The city of Rome was in the 17th century a popular place for travellers, artists and scientists. For all those who lacked the money to visit Rome, Nicolaas Visscher II (1649-1702) provided a series of prints with the most important architectural and archeological highlights of the city engraved by Willem Swidden (c. 1660-1697). This print shows the place in front of the Church of St. Peter, an achievement of the Italian architect Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini (1562-1629).
